Description:

Description for B&B:

Located in the charming countryside of Poitou Charentes, 60 km south of the Loire, you will find the picturesque medieval village of Airvault. At The Voltaire Bed and Breakfast, run by Jo Cottrell, you can expect a warm and relaxed welcome in their beautiful 19th Century mansion home.

The Voltaire is situated near the center of Airvault and offers four large double and twin bedrooms, each with its own unique style and furnishings. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, ensuring your comfort and convenience during your stay. Our priority at The Voltaire is to ensure that you have an enjoyable and comfortable experience, whether you are staying for one night, a few days, a week, or longer. Many of our guests have found themselves sleeping longer than expected due to the peaceful atmosphere and comfortable accommodations. As a result, we offer breakfast until noon to accommodate those who like to sleep in.

Each of our guest bedrooms features an en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower. We provide luxuriously thick bath sheets and hand towels, as well as handmade soaps for your enjoyment. The beds are either king-sized or twin singles, all dressed in 100% cotton bed linen and high thread count Egyptian cotton duvet covers. Our mattresses are deep sprung to ensure the perfect balance of support and comfort. We can also provide a temporary bed for a child under 12 in your room. Additionally, all rooms have ample storage space for your clothes and are furnished with cozy chairs for your relaxation.

The Voltaire also offers a cozy library with an open fire during the winter, stocked with a selection of books and board games. We also have a cooler styled sitting room that provides a tranquil atmosphere for relaxation.

When the weather permits, our outdoor spaces are the perfect spot to enjoy. The walled garden at the back of the property enjoys the morning sun, providing an ideal setting for breakfast on the lawn. As the day progresses and the garden moves into shade, it remains cooler during the hottest hours. The area in the front of the house features a raised swimming pool, offering a sun-drenched spot throughout the day.

Our continental breakfast includes freshly baked croissants and baguettes from local bakeries, Airvault honey, homemade marmalade and conserves, fruit juice, coffee, tea, and chocolate.

Upon request, we also offer evening meals consisting of four courses, accompanied by wine or soft drinks, and coffee. The price is 22 euros per adult and 12 euros per child under 12. We strive to use seasonal and local ingredients, ensuring a varied and delicious dining experience. Picnics can also be provided with prior notice.

Our location in this idyllic and unspoilt part of France means we enjoy high levels of annual sunshine, second only to the Côte d'Azur. We are also surrounded by the largest sunflower growing region in France. The village of Airvault boasts stunning architecture and offers a range of amenities within walking distance, including bakeries, butcher shops, restaurants, bars, banks with ATMs, a chemist, and a weekly market selling local produce on Saturday mornings.

In addition to the village charm, the area is surrounded by historic towns and villages, beautiful countryside, and swimming lakes. There are also larger attractions nearby, such as Futuroscope, a virtual reality theme park, Vallée des Singes, a monkey park where visitors can roam with the monkeys, Puy du Fou, a medieval theme park with spectacular shows, and La Venise Verte, Marais Poitevins' intricate waterway system that can be explored by flat-bottomed boats. Being just 60 km south of the Loire Valley, there are also numerous chateaux and vineyards to explore. These are just a few examples of what the area has to offer, and more information can be found on our website.

We provide unlimited free WiFi access, and real-time online bookings can be made through our website.

Directions

GPS coordinates:

Latitude: 46° 49' 32" N
Longitude: 00° 08' 21" W

We have provided specific directions for entering Airvault below. If you need assistance from further away, please let us know and we will be happy to email you additional instructions.

If coming from the direction of Poitiers, follow the D725 road into the town. Look for signs indicating Centre Ville. Pass the Gendarmerie on your right, go downhill and continue past the Church and Market Hall, which will also be on your right. At the end of the road, you will reach a roundabout. Groupama will be on your right, and we are located across from Groupama on the left. The Hotel du Cygne is also across from us. You will see recycling bins on the corner next to our garage. There is parking available in front of the house/garage, but if it's full, you can use the public car park diagonally opposite on the other side of the roundabout.

If coming from Parthenay, Bressuire, or Thouars, take the D725 road towards Airvault. Ignore the first turning that is signposted Airvault centre ville, which has 4 flagpoles and the town's name in flowers at the junction. Instead, continue straight on the D725. You will pass the town name, cross over the river, and shortly after, you will encounter a sharp right-hand corner with a left turn off it. Take this turning onto D27 Rue de la Gare. Cross over the level crossing and keep left at the fork. This will lead you to a roundabout. The Hotel du Cygne will be on your right, there will be a car park on your left, and on the third corner, you will find Groupama. We are located on the other corner of the roundabout.
