The village of Koewacht is a charming rural village located on the Dutch/Belgian border. It offers a unique blend of Belgian and Dutch culture. The region is perfect for cycling, hiking, and fishing. It is also a great base for exploring historic cities such as Ghent, Dendermonde, Antwerp, Holly, Middelburg, and Veere. The North Sea coast is only a 40-minute drive away, and the area is known for its untouched nature, picturesque landscapes, and beautiful forests.

Koewacht is famous for its flax culture, and there is even a museum dedicated to the processing of flax. The village's location on the border adds to its unique character, with fields of blooming flax creating a palette of blue and green. The name of the village, Koewacht, refers to the waiting of cows.

The village's geographical position on the border is linked to its history during the Eighty Years War. In 1586, the Belgian part of Koewacht belonged to the Catholic Spaniards, and raids were regularly organized from Axel against the Spanish territory. To protect the border, a series of forts were built, forming the Line of Communication between Holly and Sas van Gent. Today, only traces of some forts remain in the landscape, but the Fort Masereel has transformed into a residential area known as Koewacht. The fort was predominantly inhabited by French mercenaries, which explains the presence of French words in the local dialect. The site of the former fort is now home to the Church of St. James and Philipus. The oldest part of the church (the tower) dates back to the eighteenth century. Before the stone church was built, there was a wooden building that no longer exists. The location of the fort was strategically chosen as it was the highest part of the area, remaining dry in the often humid surroundings. The fort guarded the access to Moerbeke Polder and Ried.

In 1830, due to the Belgian secession from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, the village was divided into a Belgian and Dutch section.

Other activities in the region include canoeing and kayaking.
